Course description
Commencing in 2012, the Associate Degree of Tertiary Studies offers opportunities for candidates looking at a new entry point into higher education.
This two-year associate degree provides strong grounding in academic and foundational learning, covering such skills as:
- creative literacy
- quantitative reasoning and critical thinking
- team work
- communication
- academic research and analysis
Graduates will develop these general and transferable skills, all of which are keenly sought after by employers in a broad range of industries.
Choose from a number of streams including:
- Sociology
- Contemporary Literature
- Media and Communication
- Australian and Asian Studies
- Environmental Studies
- Natural Science
- History
- Philosophy
You can also take electives from some of NMIT’s specialist degrees in Education, Creative Arts, Earth Sciences and Business.
A Diploma of Tertiary Studies is awarded to students exiting the course after the successful completion of the first year.
Completing an Associate Degree in Tertiary Studies may open up new pathways for you to pursue further academic studies in a range of specialist degrees or further studies in Arts and Sciences at a Bachelor level.

Entry requirements
Local Students:
Applicants will be selected based on ATAR and an interview. Units 3 & 4 – a study score of at least 25 in English or successful completion of a Senior VCAL or Certificate IV in Liberal Arts. Mature Age students are also encouraged to apply. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend information sessions held in September – November. International Students:
successful completion of studies equivalent to Australian Year 12 education or relevant employment experience. Mature Age applicants must attend an interview. English language proficiency: IELTS Academic test score must be a minimum of 6.5 with no other band scores less than 6.0.
