Complete 32 University of Illinois credit hours. Accounting courses are offered as two 8-week, 2-credit hour courses, and non-accounting electives are offered as 8-week, 4-credit hour courses. Each course consists of one 8-week Coursera online MOOC, plus an interactive for-credit, online component to be completed with live interaction and guidance from Illinois Accountancy professors and teaching assistants.
Admission to the iMSA degree program requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. In general, we expect applicants to have completed at least one course in business, along with a one or two course sequence in principles of accounting. For these requirements, college course credit or a certificate of completion from a known online course provider is accepted. The recommended undergraduate GPA for iMSA degree applicants is 3.0/4.0 or higher. GMAT or GRE scores are required, but may be waived if the applicant demonstrates sufficient relevant work experience. Additional application requirements include a personal statement and letters of recommendation. Applicants whose native language is not English may be required to submit their TOEFL or IELTS test score. For more information on the admissions process, visit the University of Illinois iMSA website. In case you have not completed undergraduate coursework in business or accounting principles, please see the FAQ on prerequisites for MOOCs you can take before you apply.
You may either apply and commit to the full program immediately, or start with an open course and build toward potential admission to the full degree. If you’re sure you want to earn an accredited iMSA, we recommend applying for admission first, and taking Coursera open courses and the for-credit online courses concurrently once you’re admitted. However, if you’re not certain that the full program is right for you, you can complete one or more open courses prior to applying. If you decide to apply later, you’ll still need to complete the for-credit courses to earn your degree, but you won’t need to take the Coursera open courses again.
