As a Macquarie University student you will join a diverse and welcoming community of 37,000 students, with over 12,000 international students from more than 120 countries. Ranked among Australia’s top ten universities and within the top 40 in the Asia-Pacific region (Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Rankings of World Universities 2011), Macquarie University is recognised for its innovative curriculum, beautiful campus environment and high-quality teaching and research.
Campus location and facilities
Macquarie University’s North Ryde campus is located only 15km north-west of Sydney Harbour and Sydney’s central business district. The modern campus is set on 126 hectares of parkland in one of Australia’s premier high-technology corridors.
The campus features a brand new multi-million dollar library building, state-of-the-art sport and aquatic centre and a recently renovated campus hub with a large variety of eateries and meeting spaces. The University also has a private teaching hospital – the only teaching hospital on an Australian university campus.
Travel to Macquarie is easy, with a train station on campus and over 20 bus services connecting students to the city and suburbs. Courses are also offered at Macquarie City Campus in Sydney’s central business district.
Macquarie is renowned for its leading research centres. The 2011 results of the Australian Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report ranked Macquarie fourth in Australia for research, based on the percentage of research rated as world-standard or higher.
Macquarie has a dedicated International Student Services team who can help with almost any enquiry, including orientation, accommodation, health cover, fees, social activities, study skills and personal welfare.
Gaining leadership and career skills
Macquarie students have the opportunity to participate in a number of free extracurricular programs, designed to build leadership, cross-cultural and career skills. The Global Leadership Program, Internships Program and Participation and Community Engagement (PACE) volunteer program all help develop these personal skills, as well as an understanding of global issues. Macquarie’s Graduate Development Program helps students build their career skills and connect with leaders in industry. The program challenges and inspires students to identify the skills they need to make their future a success through individual development plans, workshops and networking.

“Macquarie offers a great multicultural environment where you can meet people from so many different backgrounds. It gives me an opportunity to learn from different cultures and understand more about the global environment. The lecturers at Macquarie are full of passion and provide lots of help, for example through consultation time.”
Audri Biswas, Bangladesh
Bachelor of Engineering
“For a young university, Macquarie is growing at a really fast rate in the engineering field, and I get first-hand knowledge from my lecturers and tutors. The best part of Macquarie is definitely how friendly everyone is, you never feel like you’re different because you are guaranteed to find someone of the same nationality as you.”
