The University of Newcastle is a great place to study, teach and research.

At Newcastle we recognise the transformative power of education. Our commitment to our 35,500 students is that every day we strive to provide the best possible learning experience. We will work with our student body to ensure our programs are providing them with a strong start in their career and a degree that will have value for life.

We are growing. The University has expanded its infrastructure at Callaghan, the Newcastle city precinct and Ourimbah. In Port Macquarie, our partnership with TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute is strong; and our presence in Singapore and Sydney are increasing in reputation and stature.

Equity and access to education are important platforms for Newcastle. We have a proud tradition of providing greater access to higher education for disadvantaged groups. We are recognised as sector leaders in Indigenous participation. Newcastle has graduated about half of the Indigenous doctors in Australia, and in recent years have had the highest number of Indigenous students of any university in the country.

On the world stage, the University delivers groundbreaking research in health and medicine, science and engineering, and energy and the environment. In recent years we have doubled our research income and we consistently rank in the top 10 universities for research.

Importantly, our research returns significant dividends to our local region. Our communities are among the University’s most valuable assets, and so it is pivotal that everything we work for – across research and teaching – comes full circle and delivers back to our region.

Built on the principles of equity, excellence and engagement, the University of Newcastle has a strong record for connecting with partners and communities across the world and across our region. Our commitment is to build a world class institution with global reach that makes a difference to the region we live in.
